Transport Modes in Lilongwe
Lilongwe is divided into the Old Town (commercial hub) and the City Centre (administrative and diplomatic hub). The choice of transport depends on your destination and security preference.
- Minibuses: The primary mode for locals. They are cost-effective and frequent but operate on flexible schedules and can be extremely crowded. Best for short hops between neighborhoods if you are comfortable with local customs.
- Taxis: The most reliable option for visitors. They provide door-to-door service and are essential for navigating between the City Centre and Old Town after dark.
- Ride-Hailing Apps: Limited compared to global hubs, but emerging services provide more transparent pricing than street-hailed taxis.
Airport to City Transfers
Lilongwe International Airport (LLW) is located a significant distance from the city center. Options include:
- Airport Taxis: Available upon arrival. Low effort, medium time, and the highest cost band.
- Pre-arranged Shuttles: Often organized via accommodation or agencies. Low effort and predictable timing.
- Public Transport: Requires multiple transfers and significant luggage handling. High effort, long time, and lowest cost band. Not recommended for those with heavy bags.
Practical Navigation Notes
There are no integrated city-wide transport passes; payments are made in cash (Malawian Kwacha) per trip.
- Rush Hours: Traffic congestion peaks during morning and evening commutes, particularly on the roads connecting the Old Town to the City Centre.
- Last Services: Minibus frequency drops sharply after sunset. Taxis remain available but are harder to hail on the street in residential areas.
- Accessibility: Public minibuses are not wheelchair accessible. Taxis offer the only viable option for those with mobility requirements.
- Luggage: Large suitcases are generally not permitted on minibuses. Use a taxi for any transit involving heavy luggage.
