Livingstone's climate and activities revolve around Zambezi River water levels and regional rainfall. Located north of Victoria Falls, the town has three distinct seasons that dictate waterfall visibility, wildlife sightings, and river sports.

High Water and Cool Skies: May to August

Winter brings dry, clear days and chilly nights. Around May and June, Victoria Falls thunders at peak volume; viewpoints face heavy spray that can obscure views. By July and August, the spray clears for balanced panoramas, and thinning bush in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park makes wildlife easier to spot. This period sees the highest visitor numbers and tightest accommodation availability.

Low Water and Intense Heat: September to November

Late dry season brings extreme heat, often passing 35 degrees Celsius in October. The Zambian side of the falls can dry to bare basalt rock. However, this is the main season for white-water rafting and excursions to Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool, as lower currents allow safe access.

The Rainy Season: December to April

Summer features heavy rains, high humidity, and lush scenery. River levels climb again by February. While rain can interrupt day trips, visitor numbers fall and birdwatching peaks.
