What It Is

Located on Place des Cordeliers in Lyon's central Presqu'île district, Saint-Bonaventure Basilica is a Gothic church dating back to the Middle Ages. It is the only medieval building in the neighborhood to survive the extensive 19th-century urban redevelopment, offering visitors a clear look into the city's pre-modern architectural heritage.

Getting There

The church stands directly in Lyon's city centre. Walking north from Place Bellecour along Rue de la République takes roughly 10 minutes. The Cordeliers metro station on Line A exits directly onto Place des Cordeliers in front of the building.

Time to Spend

Allow 20 to 30 minutes to walk through the interior, inspect the side chapels, and view the nave and stained glass.

When to Visit

Mid-morning or early afternoon offers the best daylight for viewing the interior while avoiding scheduled services. As a working parish in a busy commercial district, it receives regular local foot traffic throughout the day but rarely experiences heavy tourist crowds.
