A-Ma Temple

Overview

A-Ma Temple is Macau's oldest Chinese-style temple, dating back roughly 600 years. Dedicated to A-Ma, the patron goddess of seafarers, the site is believed to be the origin of the name "Macau." Visitors go to observe its classical pavilions, prayer halls, and stone inscriptions set into the wooded hillside.

Getting There

Located southwest of the city centre, the site is about 1.5 to 2 kilometres from Senado Square. Public buses heading to Barra reach the area in 10 to 15 minutes, while a walk along the waterfront or through the southern district takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes.

Time to Spend

Set aside 45 minutes to an hour to walk through the terraced courtyards and shrines at a comfortable pace.

When to Go

Early morning is ideal to avoid heavy tour crowds and warmer midday temperatures. The grounds get crowded by late morning, and burning incense can be thick in confined spaces. Festivals and Chinese New Year bring intense foot traffic.

What to Combine It With

You can connect your visit on foot with several nearby landmarks:

  • Our Lady of Penha Chapel (0.4km)
  • Sai Van Lake (0.5km)
  • St Lawrence's Church (0.8km)
  • St. Joseph's Seminary and Church (0.9km)
