How to get around Malmö, Sweden

Modes of Transport
Malmö is a compact city where most central attractions are reachable on foot. However, for longer distances, the following options are most effective:
- Buses: The primary public transit system. They are efficient for reaching the outskirts and connecting different neighborhoods.
- Cycling: Malmö is designed for bikes. This is the fastest way to navigate the city center and reach the Western Harbor (Västra Hamnen) area.
- Walking: Ideal for exploring the Old Town (Gamla Staden) and the pedestrian-friendly shopping streets.
Tickets and Passes
Transport is managed via the Skånetrafiken app, which is the most efficient way to purchase single tickets or period passes. Digital tickets are standard; physical ticket machines are less common.
Who they suit: Visitors staying for several days or those planning trips to nearby Lund. Who they do not suit: Short-term visitors who only stay within the immediate city center, as walking is free and sufficient.
From Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to Malmö
Since Malmö does not have its own major international airport, most visitors arrive via CPH in Denmark.
- Train (Öresundståg): The fastest option. It crosses the Öresund Bridge directly into Malmö Central Station. Low effort, mid-cost band.
- Bus: Available but generally slower and less frequent than the train. Higher effort due to potential transfers, low-to-mid cost band.
Practical Notes
- Rush Hours: Expect congestion on buses and trains during weekday morning and evening commutes.
- Last Services: Most bus and train lines operate late, but frequency drops significantly after midnight. Check the Skånetrafiken app for real-time schedules.
- Accessibility: Buses and trains are equipped for wheelchairs and strollers. Most city sidewalks are flat and accessible.
- Luggage: Trains have dedicated luggage racks; buses have limited space, so keep bags compact during peak hours.
