St Paul's Cathedral

Overview

St Paul's Cathedral is Melbourne's Anglican cathedral and the seat of both the Diocese of Melbourne and the Province of Victoria. Visitors go to view its historic Gothic Revival architecture, stone masonry, and stained glass windows directly in the city centre.

Getting There

The cathedral stands at the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, directly opposite Flinders Street Railway Station. From most central city locations, you can reach it on foot in roughly 5 to 10 minutes, or take any tram route travelling along Swanston or Flinders Street within the Free Tram Zone.

Time to Spend

Allow approximately 30 to 45 minutes to walk through the interior, view the nave, and examine the building's craftsmanship.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings or early afternoons are generally the quietest times for a visit. The interior gets crowded during scheduled church services, choir practices, and busy weekend periods. If your primary goal is to look at the architecture quietly, avoid attending during worship times.

Nearby Attractions to Combine

Its central position makes it straightforward to combine with several nearby cultural sites:

  • Federation Square (0.2km) – A prominent civic square and public gathering hub directly across the street.
  • ACMI (0.2km) – Museum dedicated to moving image culture, screen history, and digital art.
  • Ian Potter Centre (0.2km) – Gallery housing Australian art collections.
  • Melbourne Athenaeum (0.2km) – Historic venue and theatre located a short walk north.
