Fort Jesus Museum

Located on Mombasa Island, this fortress was built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 to defend the old port. It is the only Portuguese fort remaining on the Swahili coast and now serves as a museum documenting the region's military and colonial history.

Getting There

The fort is situated within the old town area of Mombasa. From the city centre, it is accessible via a short distance away via taxi or tuk-tuk, typically taking less than 10 minutes depending on local traffic.

Visit Duration

Visitors should allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the fortifications and view the museum exhibits.

When to Visit

Morning visits are recommended to avoid the peak midday heat of the coast. The site can get crowded during weekends and public holidays. There is no specific season to avoid, though the coastal humidity is constant throughout the year.

Nearby Attractions

The museum's location allows for easy combination with other historical and local sites. Within walking distance or a short drive, you can visit:

  • Mandhry Mosque (1.3km)
  • Holy Ghost Cathedral, Mombasa (1.4km)
  • Mombasa Island (2.9km)
