Cerro Fortress

The Cerro Fortress is a military fortification situated on the highest hill in Montevideo, 134 meters above sea level. Originally constructed to defend the city and its port, the site now functions as a museum. Visitors go here to explore the historical defensive structures and to view the surrounding landscape, including the Bay of Montevideo and the Río de la Plata.

Getting There

The fortress is located on the western edge of the city, away from the central district. From the city centre, you can reach the site via local bus or taxi. The journey typically takes between 30 to 50 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to explore the fortress grounds, visit the museum exhibits, and walk to the summit for the views of the bay.

When to Visit

Visiting during the morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday sun, as the hill is exposed. The site can become crowded during local holidays and weekends. There are no specific seasonal closures, but weather conditions can affect the visibility of the horizon.

Nearby Attractions

The location can be combined with other sites in the western part of the city. Nearby points of interest include:

  • Pantanoso Creek (2.2km)
  • Bay of Montevideo (2.7km)
  • Miguelete Creek (3.6km)
  • La Teja (3.7km)
