Plaza Zabala

Located in the old town of Montevideo, this public square is built on the site of a former fortress. Visitors go here to see the equestrian statue of Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, the founder of the city, which stands at the center of the plaza. It serves as a historical marker of the city's colonial origins.

Getting There

The square is situated within the Ciudad Vieja (Old City). From the main city center, it is accessible via a short walk or a brief taxi ride, typically taking 5 to 10 minutes depending on the starting point.

Duration of Visit

Since the attraction consists of a central statue and open space, most visitors spend approximately 20 to 30 minutes here.

When to Visit

The plaza is open to the public throughout the day. Like many urban squares, it can become crowded during lunch hours when local office workers use the space. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon avoids the peak midday heat and the largest crowds.

Nearby Attractions

The square is centrally located, making it easy to combine with other historical sites in the vicinity:

  • Parroquia San Francisco de Asís: 0.2km
  • Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and San Felipe and Santiago: 0.4km
  • Constitution Square: 0.4km
