Overview

Hochelaga marks the site of a 16th-century fortified village established by the St. Lawrence Iroquoians near Mount Royal. French explorer Jacques Cartier visited in 1535, an encounter that led to the naming of Montreal and surrounding places. Today, it serves as a historic monument commemorating Indigenous presence in the region.

Getting There

Located in downtown Montreal, the landmark is accessible on foot from the city centre in about 5 to 10 minutes. Travellers can also use the metro to central downtown stations, followed by a short walk.

Time to Allow

Allow roughly 15 to 30 minutes to view the commemorative marker and read the historical information on site.

When to Visit

Visit during daylight hours for clear visibility of the monument. Late spring through early autumn offers pleasant walking weather. As an open urban site, it does not experience significant tourist crowding, though downtown pedestrian traffic is steady on weekdays.
