Getting Around Moroni

Moroni has no metro, scheduled city buses, or ride-hailing apps. Travel relies on shared cars, private hires, and walking.

• Shared taxis (taxi-ville): The standard urban mode. Flag down a sedan along main roads, state your stop, and share the ride. Best for cheap point-to-point trips across town.
• Private taxi hire (course): You can charter a taxi solely for yourself. Best for travelers with luggage, off-route destinations, or late-night trips.
• Walking: The historic Badjanani Medina, the old port, and waterfront alleys are compact and best traversed on foot, as narrow stone lanes exclude cars.
• Bush taxis (taxi-brousse): Minibuses and shared cars departing from roadside depots to connect Moroni with the rest of Grande Comore.

Passes and Fares

No transit cards, travel passes, or contactless systems exist. All journeys are pay-per-ride in cash using Comorian francs. Keep small denominations handy, as drivers cannot change large bills.

Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport (HAH) Transfers

The airport sits in Hahaya, about twenty kilometers north of Moroni.

• Private taxi: Direct from outside the terminal. Low effort, roughly thirty to forty-five minutes, and in the highest local cost band. Best for luggage and late flights.
• Shared taxi from the coastal road: Requires walking outside airport gates to hail a passing car. Slower with high effort, but in the lowest cost band.

Practical Tips

• Rush hours: Expect gridlock along the coastal road and around Volo-Volo Market during morning and late-afternoon peaks.
• Night services: Shared taxis become rare after dusk. Prearrange a driver for evening travel.
• Luggage: Large bags usually incur an extra seat fare in shared taxis.
• Accessibility: Missing sidewalks, high curbs, and steep Medina steps make movement difficult for wheelchair users.
