Hellabrunn Zoo
Overview
Hellabrunn Zoo is a 40-hectare zoological garden in Munich's southern Thalkirchen district, positioned along the Isar River. Enclosures are organized by geographic region, allowing visitors to walk through natural riverside terrain while viewing a broad collection of wildlife.
Getting There
From central Munich (Marienplatz), ride U-Bahn line U3 south to Thalkirchen (Tierpark). The entrance is a 5- to 10-minute walk across the canal from the station, making total transit time about 20 to 25 minutes.
Time to Allow
Budget 3 to 4 hours to walk the main paths and visit key animal houses. Visitors with young children may want up to half a day.
When to Go
Arrive during morning hours to avoid peak entry queues. The grounds get crowded on sunny weekends and during school breaks. Spring and summer offer the best weather for outdoor walking, with indoor pavilions offering cover if it rains.
