Located in the Ilemela district of Mwanza, this national park is situated on a freshwater islands within Lake Victoria. It is primarily a nature reserve where visitors can observe local wildlife and lake scenery. The park is named after Saanane Chabwandi, a local fisherman and farmer.
Getting There
The park is accessible only by boat from the Mwanza mainland. From the city centre, visitors take a short land transfer to the designated jetty followed by a boat trip to the island. The total transit time from the centre is typically under 30 minutes, depending on boat availability.
Duration of Visit
Most visitors spend between 3 to 5 hours on the island. This allows enough time to walk the nature trails, observe the animals, and return to the mainland via the scheduled boat departures.
When to Visit
Visiting during the morning hours is recommended to avoid the midday heat. The park is accessible throughout the year, though rainfall patterns in the Lake Victoria basin can affect boat schedules. The site can become crowded during local public holidays and weekends.

Because of its proximity to the city, the park can be combined with other local landmarks. Bismarck Rock is located approximately 2.9km from the mainland access point, making it a practical addition to a Mwanza itinerary.
