New York Harbor
Overview
New York Harbor encompasses the waterways around New York City near the mouth of the Hudson River, primarily focusing on Upper New York Bay. Travelers visit to view the urban shoreline from the water and reach historic island destinations.
Getting There
From Midtown Manhattan, the waterfront piers in Lower Manhattan can be reached via subway. Taking the 1, 4, 5, R, or W trains down to South Ferry or Bowling Green takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes.
Time to Allow
Plan for 1 to 3 hours for a standard boat crossing or transit trip. If disembarking on islands or exploring the adjacent waterfront, allow half a day.
When to Visit
Mornings and late afternoons tend to have shorter boarding lines. Summer attracts large crowds and long queues. Spring and autumn offer cooler weather with fewer tourists. Winter has the lowest crowds, but open water brings freezing winds.
Nearby Attractions
The area can be easily combined with nearby island and coastal sites:
- Statue of Liberty (2.3 km)
- Liberty Island (2.4 km)
- Ellis Island (3.5 km)
- The Battery (4.6 km)
