Venetian Walls of Nicosia
These fortifications encircle the city of Nicosia and were rebuilt by the Venetian Republic in the mid-16th century to defend against the Ottoman Empire. They are among the best-preserved fortifications in the eastern Mediterranean. Visitors go here to walk the perimeter of the old city and view the military architecture of the period.
Getting There
The walls surround the city center, making them accessible by foot from most central locations. Depending on your starting point within the old city, it takes only a few minutes to reach the nearest rampart or gateway.
Time Requirement
Allow between one and three hours to explore the walls. The duration depends on whether you wish to walk a specific section or complete a larger portion of the circuit around the city.
When to Visit
The best time to visit is during the spring or autumn to avoid the extreme heat of the Cypriot summer. Early morning or late afternoon is recommended for walking the ramparts. The area can become crowded during weekends and public holidays.
