Monūafe

Monūafe was a small island in Tongan waters. Due to gradual coastal erosion, the landmass shrank over time until it was completely submerged in 2014. Because the island has vanished beneath the ocean, it is no longer a physical destination for sightseeing or landing. Travelers interested in the site visit the surrounding waters to observe the effects of sea-level rise and environmental change.

Getting There

Access to the site of the former island requires a boat trip from Nukuʻalofa. The travel time depends on the vessel used and sea conditions, but generally involves a short journey from the city's coastal areas.

Visit Duration

Since there is no land to explore, a visit typically consists of a brief boat excursion to the coordinates where the island once stood. Most visitors spend a short amount of time in the area before returning to the mainland.

When to Visit

Visits are subject to weather and tide conditions. It is advisable to avoid travel during periods of heavy storms or rough seas for safety. As it is a submerged site, it does not experience traditional tourist crowds.

Nearby Areas

Visitors can combine a trip to this site with visits to other nearby coastal locations, including:

  • Velitoa Hahake (2.2km)
  • Velitoa Hihifo (2.3km)
  • Manima (2.5km)
  • Oneata (2.8km)
