About the Fortress

Olomouc Fortress is a network of historical fortifications developed from the 17th century to protect the border between Austria and Prussia. Rather than a single enclosed castle, it comprises preserved bastions, brick walls, artillery redoubts, and military storehouses scattered across the city. Travellers visit to see remaining Baroque and later military architecture and learn how imperial defenses shaped the town's urban layout.

Getting There

Most surviving structures are located within or adjacent to the historic centre. You can reach the nearest ramparts on foot from the central squares in about 5 minutes.

Time to Allow

Allow roughly 1 to 2 hours to walk between the main surviving defensive points and view the exterior architecture.

When to Visit

Daylight hours from spring to autumn are best for walking tours around the ramparts. The outdoor sites are spacious and rarely draw dense crowds, allowing for quiet exploration at any time of day.
