Getting Around Olomouc

Olomouc is remarkably compact. Walking is the best way to explore the historic core around Horní náměstí, Dolní náměstí, and St. Wenceslas Cathedral, where pedestrian streets and cobblestones dominate.

For longer trips, the tram network is the primary public transit mode, connecting Olomouc hlavní nádraží (main station) to the old town in minutes. City buses serve outer suburbs and destinations like Svatý Kopeček, rarely needed by visitors staying centrally.

Tickets and Fares

Tickets are valid across both trams and buses. Single timed tickets must be purchased before boarding or via mobile apps, then validated inside vehicles.

• 24-hour passes: Practical only if making multiple daily trips to outlying areas or traveling frequently to the train station.
• Single tickets: Ideal for most travelers, as central Olomouc is easily walked once you arrive.

From Brno–Tuřany Airport (BRQ)

• Public transit: Take airport bus E76 to Brno main railway station, then take a direct train to Olomouc hlavní nádraží. Travel time is around 90 minutes, sitting in the lowest cost band with moderate effort.
• Taxi or rental car: Driving via the D1 and D46 motorways takes roughly 50 minutes. This option requires the least effort but sits in the highest cost band.

Practical Transit Notes

Trams become crowded during morning and late-afternoon commuter hours near university stops and the central station. Night transport shifts to hourly buses after midnight. Low-floor trams run on regular schedules, though older high-step models still operate. Cobblestones throughout the old town make rolling luggage difficult, so alight at the stop nearest your destination.
