Overview

The Dominion Observatory is a historic research facility situated on the grounds of the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. Operating between 1902 and 1970, it served as the national centre for astronomical and geodetic research. Travellers visit to see its preserved Romanesque Revival architecture and observe a landmark from early twentieth-century Canadian science within an open park setting.

Getting There

Located roughly 5 kilometres south-west of downtown Ottawa, the site is accessible by car or taxi in about 10 to 15 minutes. Public transit buses from the city centre take approximately 25 to 35 minutes to reach the perimeter of the Central Experimental Farm, followed by a short walk across the grounds.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend roughly 30 to 45 minutes viewing the exterior of the main building and walking the surrounding grounds.

When to Visit

Daylight hours between late spring and mid-autumn offer the best conditions for walking outdoors. The grounds do not typically experience heavy crowds, making it a quiet location throughout the week.
