Shopping & districts
Gloucester
Overview
Gloucester is a suburban district situated east of central Ottawa. Once an independent municipality before its amalgamation in 2001, it functions today as a key commercial and residential sector. Travellers visit primarily for retail plazas, shopping centres, and convenient dining options rather than historic sightseeing.
Getting There
From downtown Ottawa, the area is reachable by taking light rail on the O-Train Confederation Line towards Blair station, or by driving east along Highway 417. The journey usually takes between 15 and 25 minutes depending on traffic.
Recommended Time
Allow around 1 to 2 hours if stopping to browse stores or pick up essentials.
When to Visit
Weekday mornings and early afternoons are best for avoiding heavy traffic. Commercial corridors and parking lots become crowded on weekends and during the late afternoon rush hour. Because retail complexes are enclosed, the area can be visited comfortably in any season.
Nearby Attractions
A stop here can be paired with several points of interest in the eastern part of the city:
- Beacon Hill (1.4 km) – An adjacent residential community.
- Canada Aviation and Space Museum (3.6 km) – National collection of civilian and military aircraft.
- Canada Science and Technology Museum (3.7 km) – National museum featuring technology exhibits.
- Beechwood Cemetery (4.2 km) – National cemetery and historic parkland.
