Ouagadougou Cathedral

The Ouagadougou Cathedral is the Roman Catholic archdiocesan cathedral of Burkina Faso's capital. Built in the 1930s during the French West Africa era and consecrated in 1936, the building serves as a primary religious site in the city. Visitors typically go to observe its colonial-era architecture and the altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary located at the rear of the sanctuary.

Getting There

The cathedral is located within the central urban area of Ouagadougou. From the city centre, it is accessible via short taxi rides or by walking, depending on your exact starting point. The journey generally takes less than 10 minutes.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 30 to 60 minutes to walk through the cathedral and view the interior and the altar.

When to Visit

To avoid the largest crowds, visit outside of scheduled mass times and major religious holidays. The weather in Ouagadougou is typically hot, so morning or late afternoon visits are more comfortable.

Combining with Other Sites

Due to its central location, the cathedral can be paired with other nearby landmarks:

  • Maison du Peuple: 1.2km
  • Musée de la musique de Ouagadougou: 1.7km
  • Memorial Thomas Sankara: 2.6km
  • Zogona: 4.4km
