Château de Vincennes

Overview

Château de Vincennes is a fortified royal complex on the eastern edge of Paris. Used as a residence by French kings from the 14th to the 16th century, the site features a towering medieval keep and the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle. Travellers visit to see authentic medieval military defenses, royal living quarters, and fortified perimeter walls that stand in contrast to later classical palaces.

Getting There

From central Paris, take Metro Line 1 eastward to its terminus at Château de Vincennes. The ride from central hubs like Châtelet takes roughly 20 minutes, with the station exit situated beside the moat. Alternatively, RER Line A serves Vincennes station, located a short walk away.

Time to Allow

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to tour the grounds, explore the interior levels of the keep, and view the chapel.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit. The complex rarely experiences the heavy crowds typical of central Parisian landmarks, though school groups are common during term time. Because the stone interiors stay cold, bring warm layers when visiting in winter.
