Philopappos Monument

The Philopappos Monument is an ancient memorial and tomb located on Filopappou Hill, southwest of the Acropolis. It was constructed to honor Philopappos, a prince of the Kingdom of Commagene. Visitors go here to see the Roman-era architecture and the vantage point it provides over the city and the Acropolis.

Getting There

The site is accessible from the Athens city centre via a walk or a short taxi ride. From the Plaka district, it takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to reach the monument on foot, following the paths up the hill.

Duration of Visit

Allow roughly 1 to 2 hours to walk up the hill, view the monument, and explore the surrounding plateau.

When to Visit

Late afternoon is a common time to visit due to the lighting and cooler temperatures. During the summer months, the site is exposed to direct sunlight with little shade. While less crowded than the Acropolis, the paths can become busy during peak tourist seasons.
