For short hops between neighborhoods and shopping plazas, licensed route taxis (bearing red plates) follow fixed paths and depart when full. For late journeys or off-route destinations, phone-dispatched charter taxis are the safest and most reliable option.

Fares and Payment

JUTC buses utilize the electronic Smarther Card alongside limited cash acceptance. The card is valuable for regular commuters crossing into Kingston daily, but it does not suit visitors staying briefly. Route taxis and minibuses accept cash only. Norman Manley Airport (KIN) to Portmore

• Airport Taxi: Lowest effort, 45 to 60 minutes off-peak, high cost band. Authorized cabs wait outside arrivals and take Highway 2000 directly across the harbour into Portmore.
• Public Bus Transfer: High effort, 90 to 120 minutes, low cost band. Requires catching a bus to downtown Kingston and transferring to a Portmore-bound coach. Not viable with heavy luggage.
