Ponte pênsil D. Maria II

What It Is

Ponte pênsil D. Maria II was the first permanent bridge connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro River. Today, its surviving stone pillars stand on the riverbank. Visitors stop here to examine the historic masonry and look across the river toward Gaia.

Getting There

The landmark is located on the riverfront in the lower Ribeira area. From central Porto near São Bento, it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to walk downhill to the riverbank. Local buses and the funicular also reach the lower river level.

How Much Time to Allow

Plan for 15 to 30 minutes. Because only the historic pillars remain, a brief stop while walking along the promenade is sufficient.

When to Go

Morning and late afternoon provide softer light across the river. The riverside area is accessible at all times, though the surrounding path gets crowded on sunny afternoons and summer weekends.
