Elliðaár
What It Is
Elliðaár is a river and nature reserve located in the eastern area of Reykjavík. Flowing from a volcanic plateau through a protected valley toward the coast, it features walking and cycling paths along its banks. Travellers visit to experience a natural riverside environment with local flora and birdlife without leaving the capital.
Getting There
From central Reykjavík, the valley is approximately a 10- to 15-minute journey by car or public bus heading east. Cyclists can also reach the area via connected city bike routes in about 20 to 30 minutes.
Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 2 hours to walk along the main river trails and explore the reserve at a comfortable pace.
When to Visit
The trails can be visited throughout the year. Summer brings green surroundings and extended daylight, while paths may be icy or snow-covered in winter. The valley is regularly used by local joggers, dog walkers, and cyclists on weekday afternoons and sunny weekends, but the trail network rarely feels overcrowded.
What to Combine It With
You can pair a walk along the river with other nearby points of interest:
