Overview

The Building of Latvian Academy of Sciences is a 108-meter high-rise built in the 1950s in Socialist Classicist style. Originally called the Palace of Culture and Science, it is a prominent example of Soviet-era architecture in Riga. Travellers visit to see the exterior design and access the observation platform for panoramic views over the city, the Daugava River, and the Old Town.

Getting There

Located southeast of the central railway station, the site is a 15- to 20-minute walk from the Old Town. Public trams and buses also reach the area from the city centre in under 10 minutes.

Visiting Time

Allow 45 to 60 minutes to inspect the facade, take the lift up to the observation deck, and view the skyline.

When to Visit

Visit on clear days for optimal visibility. Late afternoon light works well for viewing and photography. Because the open platform is high and exposed, expect windy conditions outside warm summer days. Crowds are generally moderate and move quickly.
