Vanšu Bridge

Overview

Vanšu Bridge is a 595-meter cable-stayed bridge spanning the Daugava River in Riga. Opened in 1981, it crosses Ķīpsala Island to connect central Riga with the western bank. Visitors use the pedestrian paths to cross the river and view the water and the Old Town skyline.

Getting There

The eastern end is located beside the northern edge of Old Town. Walking there from central areas takes roughly 5 to 10 minutes. Buses and trolleybuses also cross the bridge directly from the city centre.

Time to Allow

Plan for 20 to 30 minutes to walk across one way at a regular pace. A round-trip crossing on foot takes about 45 minutes.

When to Visit

Clear weather in the late afternoon provides good lighting across the river. Morning and evening rush hours bring high vehicle traffic and road noise. In winter, strong river winds make the open footpath cold, requiring warm clothing.

Nearby Attractions

Several historic sites near the eastern approach are within short walking distance:

  • Riga Castle (0.3km)
  • Our Lady of Sorrows Church (0.4km)
  • St. Saviour's church, Riga (0.4km)
  • St. Mary Magdalene's Church (0.5km)
