Candelária Church

Overview

Candelária Church is a historic Catholic church located in downtown Rio de Janeiro. Completed over several decades, the building combines a Portuguese colonial Baroque exterior with a Neoclassical and Neo-Renaissance interior. Travellers visit to study this architectural evolution and observe the detailed marble work and ceiling paintings.

Getting There

Located at Praça Pio X in the Centro district, the site is reachable from central areas like Carioca or Cinelândia in about 10 to 15 minutes on foot. You can also take the VLT light rail directly to the Candelária stop, which takes around 5 minutes from central hubs.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 30 to 45 minutes inside to view the nave, dome, and side chapels.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are ideal because the surrounding downtown streets are active. Foot traffic thins out significantly on weekend afternoons and after dark, so visiting during regular daytime business hours is recommended. Interior crowds are generally moderate except during church services.

  • Old Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro (0.4km)
