Urca

Urca is a residential neighborhood located at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain. Travelers visit this area to explore its quiet streets and the São João Fortress, which marks the site of the first Portuguese settlement in Rio de Janeiro, established in 1565.

Getting There

From the Rio de Janeiro city centre, you can reach the neighborhood via taxi, ride-sharing apps, or local bus lines. The journey typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours to walk through the neighborhood and visit the fortress. If you plan to combine it with other nearby sites, you will need a full day.

When to Visit

Morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday heat. The area can become crowded during weekends and public holidays, particularly near the cable car station. The dry season from June to September generally offers more stable weather for walking.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its location, this area is a convenient base for visiting several other sites:

  • Sugarloaf Mountain (0.9km)
  • Carmen Miranda Museum (1.1km)
  • Morro da Babilônia (1.3km)
  • Rio Sul Center (1.4km)
