Transport Modes and When Each Wins

Rotterdam's grid and wide roads favor distinct transit options depending on distance and water crossings.

  • Bicycle: The fastest choice for central trips. Segregated cycle paths run across the entire city, including the Erasmus Bridge.
  • Metro and Tram: Operated by RET. Five metro lines intersect at Beurs for rapid river crossings. Trams cover surface routes into Delfshaven and Kralingen.
  • Waterbus: Catamarans cross the Nieuwe Maas toward Katendrecht and Kinderdijk where bridges are distant.

Tickets and Passes

OVpay allows contactless tap-in and tap-out using a bank card or phone across all RET services and trains. Always tap the same card at entry and exit gates.

RET day passes only suit travelers taking four or more trips in one day. Walkers and cyclists save money by paying per ride.

Schiphol Airport (AMS) to Rotterdam

Trains depart directly from the station beneath Schiphol's terminal to Rotterdam Centraal.

  • Intercity Direct: Takes twenty-five minutes on the high-speed line. Requires a separate supplement alongside standard rail fare.
  • Standard Intercity: Takes roughly fifty minutes via The Hague. Operates in a lower cost band without supplement fees.
  • Taxi: High cost band and takes roughly an hour in motorway traffic, offering little advantage over rail.

Practical Advice

Weekday rush hours span 07:30 to 09:00 and 16:30 to 18:30, crowding Beurs station and cycle paths. Regular metro and tram services end around midnight. Stations have elevators, and trams feature low-floor boarding for luggage and wheelchairs.
