• Walking: The town center, market, and offices are easily reached on foot. Distances are short, though hillside tracks can be steep and rocky.
• Motorcycle Taxis: The primary option for crossing town or reaching trailheads near Mount Kikizi. They navigate dirt tracks that four-wheeled vehicles struggle to clear.
• Shared Minibuses: Minibuses and pickups link Rutana to Gitega and Makamba, departing from the market area once full.

Tickets and Fares

There are no transit passes or travel cards. All rides require cash payment in Burundian Francs. Agree on motorcycle taxi fares before getting on. For minibuses, pay the conductor upon boarding. Carry small notes, as drivers rarely have change.

Bujumbura International Airport is the main arrival hub, located roughly 150 kilometers northwest across the highlands.
