Museum of High Altitude Archaeology

Located in the old town of Salta, this museum houses Inca-era artifacts and mummies recovered from the Llullaillaco volcano. Visitors go here to see the well-preserved remains and offerings excavated in 1999 from one of the highest archaeological sites at the highest altitude in the world.

Getting There

The museum is situated within the central district of Salta. From the city centre, it is accessible via a short walk of a few minutes, as it is located in the heart of the historic area.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to walk through the exhibits and view the mummies and associated relics.

When to Visit

The museum is an indoor attraction, making it a viable option regardless of the season. To avoid the largest crowds, visiting during weekday mornings is generally more quiet than weekends or peak holiday periods.
