Overview

Kafir-kala consists of ancient fortress ruins situated along the banks of the Darghom River, south of Samarkand. The site features the remains of an early mudbrick citadel and surviving outlines of a moat, offering travelers a direct look at the historic defense system that once guarded this oasis city.

Getting There

The ruins are located south of central Samarkand and can be reached by taxi or car. The drive from the city center typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend around 30 to 45 minutes on site. The area is primarily an unpaved open-air archaeological mound, which can be walked through relatively quickly.

When to Visit

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking across the exposed earthworks. During the summer, visit during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid direct sun and high midday temperatures. The ruins do not experience heavy tourist crowds.
