USS Pampanito
USS Pampanito
The USS Pampanito is a World War II-era submarine that served in six war patrols and later functioned as a training vessel. Now a museum ship docked at Fisherman's Wharf, it allows visitors to walk through the interior of the vessel to see the living quarters, control room, and torpedo rooms.
Getting There
The submarine is located at the waterfront. From the city centre, you can reach the site via public transit, such as the F-Market & Wharves historic streetcar or various bus lines. The trip typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on your starting point and traffic conditions.
Visit Duration
Allow approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the interior of the submarine and read the historical displays. The narrow corridors and steep ladders can slow down movement.
When to Visit
Morning visits are generally quieter. Because it is located in a high-traffic tourist district, the area gets crowded during midday and weekends. The interior of the vessel remains relatively stable in temperature, but the surrounding wharf area is often windy and cool regardless of the season.
