Fortress of San Leo

Overview

The Fortress of San Leo sits on a rock formation along the border of Romagna and Marche. Formerly a military stronghold and Montefeltro family residence, it now operates as a museum. Travelers visit to see historical defensive architecture, weapon collections, and the prison cell where Count Cagliostro died.

Getting There

From central San Marino, driving takes about 25 to 30 minutes. From the lower village, reach the entrance via a steep uphill walk or a seasonal shuttle service.

Time to Allow

Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours to view the indoor exhibits, courtyards, and ramparts.

When to Go

Spring and autumn offer mild weather for outdoor walking. Summer afternoons are hot with little shade on the walls. The site gets crowded on summer weekends and Italian public holidays, making early arrival advisable.
