Transport Modes in San Marino

Due to the steep topography of Mount Titano, transport is divided between the lower valley and the historic hilltop center.

  • Walking: The primary mode within the Old Town. It is the only way to access the Three Towers and the cathedral, though it involves significant inclines.
  • Public Bus (AAS): The most efficient way to reach the city center from the lower parking areas or neighboring towns.
  • Tourist Bus (San Marino Tourist Shuttle): A dedicated service that connects the main parking lots directly to the historic center, winning on convenience for those with limited mobility.
  • Rental Cars: Useful for exploring the wider Republic, but impractical for the Old Town due to strict traffic restrictions and limited parking.

Airport to City Transfers

Visitors typically arrive via Federico Fellini International Airport (RMI) in Italy.

  • Bus: Low cost, moderate effort. Requires a transfer from the airport to Rimini, then a local bus to San Marino. Takes the longest time.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer: High cost, low effort. The fastest direct route from RMI to the base of Mount Titano.

Tickets and Passes

Single tickets are available for short trips. For those staying multiple days and visiting various points of interest outside the capital, multi-trip passes are available. These do not suit short-term visitors who intend to spend their entire stay walking within the pedestrianized Old Town.

Practical Notes

  • Accessibility: The historic center is heavily pedestrianized with many stairs and cobblestones, making it challenging for wheelchairs and strollers.
  • Luggage: Large suitcases are not permitted in the Old Town; use the luggage facilities at the main parking hubs.
  • Last Services: Bus frequency drops significantly in the evening. Check schedules for the final shuttle from the center back to the valley.
