Ilhéu das Cabras is an uninhabited islet off the coast of São Tomé, characterized by two low hills and a lighthouse erected in 1890 that still guides maritime traffic. Travellers visit to explore the terrain on foot, view the historic beacon, and observe the surrounding coastline from the water.

Getting There

Reaching the islet requires a boat transfer from the mainland shore near the capital. Driving from central São Tomé to a northern coastal launch point and boarding a boat takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes in total.

Recommended Time

Allow 1 to 2 hours on the island to walk between the hills and examine the lighthouse before making the return trip.

When to Visit

Morning is preferable to avoid midday heat and choppier afternoon sea conditions. The dry season typically offers calmer waters for the crossing. Because access is boat-only, the site rarely gets crowded.
