Hokkaido Museum
Hokkaido Museum opened in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan in 2015. Located within Nopporo Shinrin Kōen Prefectural Natural Park, the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the nature, history, and culture of Hokkaido. Also known as Mori-no-Charenga (森のちゃれんが), the museum integrates and replaces the Historical Museum of Hokkaido (北海道開拓記念館), which opened in 1971, and the Hokkaido Ainu Culture Research Centre (北海道立アイヌ民族文化研究センター), which opened in 1994.
What it is
The Hokkaido Museum opened in 2015 as a merger of two older institutions covering the island's natural history, human history, and Ainu culture. Exhibits move from geology and prehistoric wildlife through Ainu life and material culture to the Japanese settlement of Hokkaido and its modern development. It's a good stop for travellers who want context for Hokkaido as distinct from mainland Japan, particularly on Ainu culture, which gets more depth here than at most general history museums.
Getting there
The museum sits inside Nopporo Shinrin Kōen, a forest park on the eastern edge of Sapporo. From the city centre, the usual route is JR to Shin-Sapporo or Ōasa Station, then a bus into the park, or a bus directly from central Sapporo. Allow around 45 minutes to an hour each way depending on connections; a taxi from downtown is faster but a longer ride.
Time to allow
Plan on two to three hours for the permanent exhibition alone. Add extra time if a special exhibition is running, or if you plan to walk any of the surrounding park trails.
When to go
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter, since the museum draws school groups on weekdays. The forest park setting makes autumn foliage a particularly good time to combine museum and outdoor scenery, though it can get busy then. Winter access may be affected by snow around the park paths, so check conditions if visiting that season.
