JR Tower

JR Tower

Sapporo JR Tower is a skyscraper, shopping mall and office complex in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan. The tower is located above JR Sapporo Station South entrance, and the height of the tower is 173 m (568 ft) with 38 stories. Officially, Sapporo JR Tower includes not only the Tower itself, but also the Sapporo Stellar Place, the Daimaru Sapporo branch store, the Sapporo Cinema Frontier, the JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo, office complex, and other sections neighboring JR Sapporo Station. It also houses the parking lot, observation deck, and heliport.

JR Tower

JR Tower rises directly above JR Sapporo Station, combining an office tower with the Sapporo Stellar Place shopping complex, the Daimaru Sapporo department store, a cinema, and a hotel. The main draw for visitors is the T38 observation deck near the top of the tower, which gives an open view over Sapporo toward the surrounding hills — useful for getting a sense of the city's grid layout, and popular around sunset.

Getting there

The tower sits on top of Sapporo Station, so if you're anywhere in the central Odori or Susukino area, it's a short subway ride or a walk of around 15-20 minutes. Once inside the station complex, signs direct you to the tower entrance and the elevators up to the observation deck.

How much time to allow

Seeing the observation deck alone takes about 30-45 minutes. If you plan to browse the shopping floors, eat at one of the restaurants, or catch a film, allow an extra one to two hours.

When to go

Late afternoon into early evening is a good window for the view, since you can see the city in daylight and then watch it light up after dark. Weekends and evenings around dinnertime tend to be busier, both in the observation deck and in the restaurant floors below.

Combine with

  • Sapporo Clock Tower (0.6km) and Nihon Kirisuto Kyodan Sapporo Church (0.6km) are both close enough to fold into a short walk before or after visiting the tower.
  • Guardian Angels Cathedral (1.1km) is a bit further but still walkable.
  • Sapporo Beer Museum (1.4km) works well as a separate stop later in the day, given the extra distance.
