Maruyama Park

Maruyama Park

Maruyama Park is a park in Chūō-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. The park was modeled after the park with the same name sited in Kyoto.

What it is

Maruyama Park is a green space in Chūō-ku that combines a section of natural forest with open lawns and paths. It was laid out with Kyoto's Maruyama Park in mind, though today it functions primarily as a neighbourhood park and a green buffer connecting the city centre to the wooded grounds of Hokkaidō Jingū next door. Travellers usually come for a walk among the trees rather than for any single landmark inside the park.

Getting there

From central Sapporo (Odori area), the park is reachable by subway on the Tōzai Line to Maruyama-kōen Station, followed by a short walk of a few minutes. The trip from downtown takes roughly 15-20 minutes door to door.

How much time to allow

An hour is enough for a walk through the main paths. If you plan to continue on into the adjoining shrine grounds or the zoo, budget half a day for the area as a whole.

When to go

The park is at its most photogenic in spring during the cherry blossom season and in autumn when the leaves change, and both periods draw larger crowds, especially on weekends. Outside those windows it is generally quiet. Early morning is a good time to visit if you prefer fewer people.

Combine it with

  • Sapporo Maruyama Zoo (0.2km) - directly adjacent, an easy add-on before or after the park.
  • Hokkaidō Jingū (0.4km) - a short walk through the park's forested section leads to this shrine.
  • Miyanomori International Museum of Art, Sapporo (0.9km) - within walking distance for those with extra time.
  • Hongō Shin Memorial Museum of Sculpture, Sapporo (1.2km) - can be worked into the same outing if walking further.
