Getting Around Seoul

The subway is the most efficient transit mode in Seoul, bypassing surface congestion between key districts like Jongno, Hongdae, and Gangnam. Stations offer clear English signage, color coding, and numbered exits. City buses excel for direct cross-town connections where subway transfers are cumbersome, as well as reaching hilly areas like Bukchon and Namsan.

Incheon Airport to the City

  • AREX Express: Non-stop to Seoul Station. Fastest travel time, low-to-mid cost band, and reserved seating.
  • AREX All-Stop: Commuter train stopping at intermediate stations. Lowest cost band, slightly slower, best for reaching western subway lines directly.
  • Airport Limousines: Direct buses to major neighborhoods. Mid cost band, minimal physical effort with luggage, but subject to peak traffic.
  • Taxis: Highest cost band, total door-to-door convenience with zero transfers.

Transit Passes and Payment

A rechargeable T-money card is the standard payment method, unlocking discounted transfers between subways and buses. Specialized unlimited tourist passes exist, but they rarely suit travelers taking fewer than four trips a day or those traveling beyond municipal boundaries.

Practical Transit Notes

  • Rush Hours: Weekdays 07:30–09:00 and 18:00–19:30 bring heavy crowding across subway transfers and major roads.
  • Last Services: Trains finish around midnight. Late-night Owl Buses run dedicated overnight routes until dawn.
  • Luggage and Accessibility: Elevators and wide gates are standard, though older transfer stations require long walks.
