Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum
Overview
The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum occupies the historic site of the former Ohel Moshe Synagogue in the Tilanqiao Historic Area of Hongkou. It documents the history of approximately 20,000 Jewish refugees who fled Nazi persecution during World War II and found refuge in Shanghai. The permanent galleries display personal belongings, photographs, archival records, and recorded testimonies that illustrate daily life within the wartime settlement.
Getting There
From central Shanghai areas such as People's Square, transit takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Visitors can take the Shanghai Metro to Tilanqiao Station, located a short walk from the entrance, or travel by taxi directly to the site.
Time to Spend
Allow between 1.5 and 2.5 hours to walk through the exhibition halls, read the interpretive displays, and view the preserved synagogue building.
When to Visit
Mornings on weekdays are generally less crowded before tour groups arrive. The interior galleries can become busy on weekends and national holidays. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for walking through the surrounding historic district.
