Seasonal Conditions and Daylight

Šiauliai experiences sharp seasonal contrasts, with daylight ranging from seventeen hours in June to just seven hours in December.

  • Summer (June–August): Warm days around 20°C to 24°C and late sunsets create peak travel conditions across northern Lithuania.
  • Autumn (September–November): September offers crisp, pleasant weather, whereas November is damp, cold, and heavily overcast.
  • Winter (December–February): Sub-zero temperatures, snow, and stiff winds make open rural areas feel exceptionally cold.
  • Spring (March–May): Early spring is muddy, but May brings mild, dry weather and minimal tourist crowds.

When to Go and When to Avoid

Late May through August is ideal for sightseeing and day trips with reliable transit. September is the best shoulder month for cooler, quiet travel. Avoid November and March due to slush, cold rain, and short daylight hours that hinder outdoor visits.

High-Demand Dates

The annual Feast of the Hill of Crosses takes place on the last Sunday of July, drawing thousands of pilgrims. Regional transport and lodging fill up well in advance. In early September, Šiauliai Days brings street festivals and increased activity around the central Vilniaus Street walking boulevard.

Transit and Packing Advice

Travelers arriving at Riga International Airport (RIX) can take cross-border buses south to Šiauliai. To reach the Hill of Crosses, board a local bus toward Joniškis at the central bus station, disembark at Domantai, and walk two kilometers down an exposed rural road. For summer, pack walking shoes, sun protection, and a light rain jacket. For winter, bring thermal base layers, a windproof coat, and boots with traction for icy rural paths.
