Overview

Gutmanis Cave is a natural sandstone cave on the banks of the Gauja River in Gauja National Park. It is the largest and tallest cave in the Baltics, noted for preserved wall inscriptions dating back to the 17th century and its connection to the legend of the Rose of Turaida.

Getting There

From central Sigulda, you can walk to the site along marked trails in about 30 minutes, or take a local bus or taxi in under 10 minutes. Travellers arriving by air typically fly into Riga International Airport (RIX) before continuing to Sigulda by train or bus.

Time to Allow

Set aside 20 to 30 minutes to view the cave opening, read informational plaques, and inspect the historic inscriptions.

When to Visit

The site draws tour buses and heavy foot traffic on summer weekends and during midday. Arriving in the early morning or during off-peak weekdays allows for a quieter visit. Trails can become slippery in rain or snow.
