Singapore River
The Singapore River is a river that flows parallel to Alexandra Road and feeds into the Marina Reservoir in the southern part of Singapore. The immediate upper watershed of the Singapore River is known as the Singapore River Planning Area, although the western part of the watershed is classified under the River Valley planning area.
What it is
The Singapore River is a short waterway that runs through the heart of the city, feeding into Marina Reservoir. It's less a nature spot than an urban river walk: former docks and warehouses along Boat Quay and Clarke Quay have been converted into restaurants, bars, and promenades, and the river is now used mainly for tour boats rather than the trading vessels that once crowded it. A traveller comes here to walk the quays, take a bumboat ride past the old shophouses, and see the contrast between colonial-era buildings and the modern skyline around Marina Bay.
Getting there
The river runs right through the downtown core, so most visitors reach it on foot from nearby hotels or via the MRT — Clarke Quay and Raffles Place stations both sit close to the water. From most points in the city centre, expect a walk of 10–15 minutes or a short train ride.
How much time to allow
An hour or two is enough for a walk along one or two stretches of the riverside. If you add a boat ride, allow closer to two to three hours in total.
When to go
Early evening is a good time to walk the quays, when the heat has eased and the buildings along the water start to light up. The riverside bars and restaurants around Clarke Quay and Boat Quay get busy on weekend nights, so expect crowds and noise if you're after a quieter stroll.

The river sits close to several major sights, making it easy to combine with a short walking route:
- Merlion Park (0.2km) — right by the river mouth, a natural next stop
- Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay (0.2km) — a short walk along the waterfront toward Marina Bay
