Overview

The Kelasuri Wall is an ancient defensive stone fortification on the eastern outskirts of Sokhumi. Believed to date back to roughly the 6th century, though its exact origins remain uncertain, the defensive line once featured around 300 watchtowers. Today, the surviving stone ruins are dispersed along the landscape and can be explored on foot by visitors interested in regional history.

Getting There

Located just east of central Sokhumi, the site is reachable by local transport, taxi, or car. The drive from the city centre typically takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on the chosen access point.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours on site to walk along the accessible stone sections and inspect the surrounding terrain.

When to Visit

Visit during daylight hours, as the ruins are unlit and trails can be overgrown or uneven. Spring and autumn offer mild conditions for outdoor walking. The site does not get crowded and typically sees very few visitors. Wear sturdy shoes for navigating rough paths.
