Shilin Night Market is one of Taipei's largest and best-known night markets, spread across a covered food hall and the surrounding streets of Shilin District. Most visitors come for the food stalls, which cover everything from grilled skewers and stinky tofu to fried chicken and dessert stands, alongside clothing, accessories, and game stalls typical of Taiwanese night markets. It's a place to graze your way through several small dishes rather than sit down for one meal.
Getting there
From central Taipei, the market is easiest to reach by MRT on the Red Line to Jiantan Station, which sits right across the street from the main market area. From stations near the city centre, the ride typically takes around 15-20 minutes.
How much time to allow
Plan for at least 1.5 to 2 hours to wander the food hall and surrounding lanes without feeling rushed, more if you want to sample widely or browse the clothing and accessory stalls in detail.
When to go
The market gets noticeably crowded in the evening, especially on weekends, with narrow aisles in the underground food hall filling up shoulder to shoulder. Arriving earlier in the evening, before the peak dinner crowd, makes it easier to move around and find seating.
