Town Hall Square

What It Is

Town Hall Square is the central open plaza in Tallinn's Old Town, situated directly next to the historic Town Hall. It functions as a focal point of the medieval quarter and provides a practical place to pause, sit, and rest while walking through the cobblestone streets.

Getting There

Located in the pedestrian area of the Old Town, the site is accessible on foot from the modern city centre in about 5 to 10 minutes. For travellers arriving at Tallinn Airport (TLL), public transport or taxis reach the perimeter of the Old Town, after which the square is a short walk inward.

How Much Time to Allow

Plan for 20 to 45 minutes. This gives you enough time to cross the plaza, view the surrounding buildings, and sit down before continuing to other parts of the district.

When to Visit

The space gets crowded during midday hours in summer when tour groups pass through. Early mornings and evenings are noticeably quieter. In the winter months, visitors gather here for seasonal events, making afternoons and evenings busier.

What to Combine It With

The plaza connects directly to several nearby destinations:

  • Tallinn Christmas Market (0km) – Set up directly on the square during the winter season.
  • Church of the Holy Spirit (0.1km) – Located just northeast of the square.
  • Saint Catherine's Monastery (0.1km) – A short walk to the east along historic passages.
  • St. Peter's and St. Paul's Cathedral (0.2km) – Situated nearby on Vene Street.
