Ilkhom Theatre
About the Theatre
Founded in 1976 by Mark Weil, Ilkhom Theatre was the first independent theatre company in the former Soviet Union. It continues to operate without outside funding. Travellers visit to see contemporary stage productions and experimental performances that offer an alternative perspective on Central Asian arts.
Getting There
Located in central Tashkent, the venue is easily reached from downtown. A taxi ride takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes depending on traffic. Alternatively, you can walk from nearby central metro stations in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Time to Allow
Allow 2 to 3 hours if attending a performance. For travellers simply exploring the building or viewing foyer exhibits before a show, 30 to 45 minutes is plenty.
When to Go
Performances take place in the evening. Seating is limited and shows often sell out, so booking tickets in advance is recommended. The venue is most active during the autumn-to-spring theatre season.
